ArtsNational Newcastle illustrated lecture - Constantinople and Istanbul: A Tale of Two Cities
Constantinople and Istanbul, two names for one city. One city straddling Europe and Asia: Byzantine imperial capital for 1000 years then capital city of the Ottoman Turks. Minarets and domes of Turkish mosques dominate the skyline, the waters of the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus lap its shores, and a stroll through the streets reveals the city’s diverse and magnificent heritage. Byzantine churches with colourful mosaics, Ottoman mosques with beautiful tilework, the luxurious palaces of the sultans, elegant fountains, bathhouses and bustling covered markets make Istanbul one of the most fascinating cities in the world. Sue Rollin will present two lectures From Constantine to Conquest: The Byzantine City and The Ottoman City. There will be a break for morning tea. Register by 12 March 2025 Event held in Apollo International Hotel

Virtual Museum Tour - Diverse Perspective in Art History
Join a virtual museum tour at the Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima (MAP mima) where the immersive 360-degree projection Cube is transformed into a gallery of artworks representing female, non-binary and transgender perspectives. The guided tour will trace the history of artists whose work has typically been diminished or excluded from the art canon. The state-of-the-art 360-degree projection Cube will be transformed into a stunning gallery showcasing the often hidden perspectives of non-binary, transgender and female experiences. This immersive experience will explore the rich and diverse history of people who defied social conventions and fought against institutional exclusions and inequities. The guide will lead you through the evolution of art across continents, highlighting significant movements and iconic gender-diverse and women artists who have helped to shape art-historical narratives and yet continue to be significantly underrepresented. Stereotypes, unconscious (and conscious) bias, and historical norms have acted as barriers to equal representation. This virtual tour offers visitors a unique opportunity to engage with the cultural contributions of women and gender-diverse people and to reconsider and challenge the canon. Entry Cost All tickets $9 - $10 General admission $9 Lake Mac Arts Members. All tickets + booking fee. Event held in 96 Creek Reserve Road, Speers Point, NSW 2284

Abstract Human Radio - Hearing Now
Recline, recuperate and submerge into the captivating world of environmental sound with 'Hearing Now'. Using environmental sounds captured with field and underwater microphones, Fin Wegener composes layers of ambient music that respond to and decorate his surroundings, revealing harmonies and rhythms that hide in the natural every day. These long-form decorations of natural soundscapes can underscore the wonder of a distant dusk chorus, or connect listeners to hidden sound worlds within bodies of water. ‘Hearing Now’ is a project by artist Finley Wegener that brings experimental music performance into collaboration with natural sounds. Acknowledgments: ‘Hearing Now’ is a higher-degree research project facilitated by the University of the Sunshine Coast: School of Business and Creative Industries. The project is supported by and contributes to a body of research conducted by the Creative Ecologies Research Cluster led by Leah Barclay and Toby Gifford. This event is part of Twilight Fridays at MAP mima that runs until 11 April 2025. Event held in 96 Creek Reserve Road, Speers Point, NSW 2284
