About

Kinship, ritual, adornment, and activism are masterfully woven together in this exhibition and workshop series by legendary Tagata Moana (People of the Pacific) art collective, the Pacific Sisters. Bunjil Place Gallery transforms into a vibrant, welcoming space that seeks to celebrate and honour the shared histories of First People and Moana Peoples. Encounter niu aitu (new ancestors) avatar, dressed in iconic and intricate handmade garments and cherished measina, alongside taonga (treasures)from Museums Victoria. Kick back in a Pasifika lounge adorned with imagery and archival footage of the Pacific Sisters’ 30+ years of groundbreaking artistic work. Since their emergence in the early 1990s, the Pacific Sisters have gained international acclaim for their innovative, multidisciplinary practice and fashion activism. The Pacific Sisters are revered advocates for bodily autonomy, environmental care, and collective action. Do not miss this major retrospective, curated by Jade Hadfield (Ngati Kahungunu, Ngati Whatua ki Kaipara).
