About
Awarded to the best portrait painted by an artist resident in Australasia, the Archibald Prize is a who's who of contemporary culture, from politicians to celebrities and from sporting heroes to artists. Prestigious and controversial, the Archibald Prize is Australia's foremost portraiture prize. Finalists are exhibited at the Art Gallery of New South Wales before embarking on a year-long regional tour, including here at the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery.
The Archibald Prize awards $100,000 prize money for the winning artist. In its 98th year, the Archibald Prize has been held annually since 1921. An open competition, the Archibald Prize is judged by the trustees of the Art Gallery of NSW. Entries to the Archibald Prize must be painted in the past year from at least one live sitting. Finalists are exhibited at the Art Gallery of New South Wales before embarking on a year-long regional tour. In the early years, all entries were hung. The 2019 Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes is proudly presented by ANZ. This year is the 10th anniversary of ANZ’s partnership with Australia’s most extraordinary art event.
2019 Archibald Prize is on show at both Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery and Culture Hub, Level 1, Coffs Central, Harbour Drive, Coffs Harbour.
Culture Hub: Coffs Harbour Libraries, Museum and Gallery in association with Coffs Central. Combining arts, community and culture for Coffs Harbour and our region.
Young Archie Competition
As part of the exhibition, the Gallery is hosting the Young Archie competition. Budding Coffs Coast artists between the ages of 5 and 18 were invited to submit a portrait for the Young Archie competition, as part of our family-focused activities for the 2019 Archibald Prize regional tour. All portraits entered into the Young Archies will feature on the walls of Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery and Culture Hub, right alongside the prestigious Archibald Prize 2019.
